Calibrating and validating AquaCrop model for maize crop in Northern zone of Nigeria CIGR Journal
Ezekiel, Oiganji; Igbadun, H. E.; Mudiare, O.J.; Oyebode, M.A..
Farmers in the northern Guinea Savannah ecological zone of Nigeria have been experiencing declining crop yield due to erratic water supply. In recent times, research on better water management and interaction between effects of climate, soil and field management on crop production is fast gaining grounds with the use of models. Models can be used to predict the impact of long-term climate variability, thus providing an opportunity of better techniques compared with the traditional multi-location trials. This study presents the calibration and validation of AquaCrop model for drip irrigated maize (Zea mays). Calibration was done using data of 2013, while validation across seasons was done with data of 2014. The modelling efficiency of grain yield, biomass...

EFFECT OF ALTERNATE PARTIAL ROOT ZONE DRIP IRRIGATION AND MULCHING ON ZUCCHINI CIGR Journal
Imam, Hisham Mohamed.
Innovative irrigation agricultural and irrigation strategies are desirable in the face of dwindling water resources and increasing demand for food, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. The presented work investigated the effect of both  Alternate Partial Root-Zone Drying (APRD), mulching and drip irrigation system type on yield productivity and water use efficiency of Zucchini. Field experiments were conducted at Testing and Research Station for Tractors and Farm Machinery, Alexandria Governorate. The experimental treatments were: two types of irrigation management (full and APRD), and two soil covering (plastic mulching and without plastic mulch) under both surface and subsurface drip irrigation systems. The soil electrical conductivity was 8.19...

Effect of irrigation amounts applied with subsurface drip irrigation on corn evapotranspiration, yield, water use efficiency, and dry matter production in a semiarid climate NWISRL
Payero, J.O.; Tarkalson, D.D.; Irmak, S.; Davison, D.; Petersen, J.L..
Quantifying the local crop response to irrigation is important for establishing adequate irrigation management strategies. This study evaluated the effect of irrigation applied with subsurface drip irrigation on field corn (Zea mays L.) evapotranspiration (ETc), yield, water use efficiencies (WUE = yield/ETc, and IWUE = yield/irrigation), and dry matter production in the semiarid climate of west central Nebraska. Eight treatments were imposed with irrigation amounts ranging from 53 to 356 mm in 2005 and from 22 to 226 mm in 2006. A soil water balance approach (based on FAO-56) was used to estimate daily soil water and ETc. Treatments resulted in seasonal ETc of 580–663 mm and 466–656 mm in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Yields among treatments differed by as...

Effect of partial soil wetting on transpiration, vegetative growth and root system of young orange trees Scientia Agricola
Vellame,Lucas Melo; Fraga Júnior,Eusímio Felisbino; Coelho,Rubens Duarte.
The wetted area fraction is a factor critical to the success of drip irrigation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of partial soil wetting on transpiration, vegetative growth and root system of young orange trees. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse where plants were grown in 0.5 m3boxes internally divided into compartments. The wetting of 12 % of soil area was tested on two types of soil cultivated with ‘Valencia’ orange trees grafted onto Rangpur lime and ‘Swingle’ citrumelo rootstocks. Transpiration was determined in 40 plants. Water extraction and root density were evaluated in the compartments. Transpiration is reduced by restriction in wetted soil area, and such reduction is influenced by the number of days after the beginning of...

Effect of timing of a deficit-irrigation allocation on corn evapotranspiration, yield, water use efficiency and dry mass NWISRL
Payero, J.O.; Tarkalson, D.D.; Irmak, S.; Davison, D.; Petersen, J.L..
Water regulations have decreased irrigation water supplies in Nebraska and some other areas of the USA Great Plains. When available water is not enough to meet crop water requirements during the entire growing cycle, it becomes critical to know the proper irrigation timing that would maximize yields and profits. This study evaluated the effect of timing of a deficit-irrigation allocation (150 mm) on crop evapotranspiration (ETc), yield, water use efficiency (WUE = yield/ETc), irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE = yield/irrigation), and dry mass (DM) of corn (Zea mays L.) irrigated with subsurface drip irrigation in the semiarid climate of North Platte, NE. During 2005 and 2006, a total of sixteen irrigation treatments (eight each year) were...

Effective moisture conservation method for heavy soil under drip irrigation CIGR Journal
Harby M. S. Mostafa; Dr. of Agricultural Eng..
Abstract: Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient systems in delivering water to the plant root zone but it still allows relatively high evaporation from the saturated zone that develops under emitters especially in clay soils of low infiltration rates.  Initial lateral water movement may take a long time in such soils thus exposing surface water to high evaporation.  The vertical columns method induces water infiltration keeping the actual water surface deeper in the soil profile.  The objective of this research is to compare between the effect of vertical compost and sand columns on the distribution of water in the root zone and the potential for water saving in clay soil.  A field experiment was conducted and the...

Growth analysis and yield of tomato crop under different irrigation depths AGRIAMBI
Monte,José A.; Carvalho,Daniel F. de; Medici,Leonardo O.; Silva,Leonardo D. B. da; Pimentel,Carlos.
The influence of irrigation depth was evaluated on tomato crop hybrid Debora plus for salad in a field experiment in split-block design with five treatments (irrigation depth of 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and four replications. During the experiment, ten plant samples were collected to determine phytomass and leaf area to estimate plant growth parameters for different depths of irrigation. Results showed maximal growth between 70 and 80 days after transplanting in all treatments. Increase in irrigation depth above 80% of ETc increased crop growth rate (CGR), leaf area index (LAI) and total production of tomato fruits, although same commercial fruit yield was obtained with the lower depths. Therefore, an increase in depth of...

Innovative Technology of Egyptian Mosques by Using Solar Energy and Reusing Ablution Water in Sustainable Crop Production CIGR Journal
Ramadan, Abdelraouf.
Egypt is nowadays facing a lot of challenges, such as limited water and energy resources. In the near future and after building El-NAHDA Dam in Ethiopia, Egypt will suffer from a severe aqueous shortage. Another fatal problem is the unavailability of getting enough energy supplies. Here, the problem of energy is a natural consequence of unsustainable development of energy patterns followed during the last decades. There are many new water resources that have not been well exploited in agriculture. One of these resources is the ablution water in the Egyptian mosques. This new resource can be managed by solar (photovoltaic) energy, as Egypt has good weather with high rates of solar radiation which can reach up to 3000 hours/year. This study cared out to...

METHODOLOGY FOR DIMENSIONING OF A CENTER PIVOT IRRIGATION SYSTEM OPERATING WITH DRIPPER TYPE EMITTER REA
Almeida,Alex N. de; Coelho,Rubens D.; Costa,Jéfferson de O.; Farías,Asdrúbal J..
ABSTRACT: In Brazil, the conventional center pivot is widely used for irrigation of agricultural crops and its use has grown continuously. However, when improperly managed, it facilitates the development of diseases in all parts of the plant, with a direct effect on productivity, besides favoring losses of water by evaporation. The drip may be an alternative, since it minimizes the losses and does not wet the aerial parts of the plants, thereby reducing the incidence of diseases. A new system called localized mobile drip irrigation (IRGMO) is being developed in an attempt to combine the practicality and rusticity of the center pivot with the efficiency and water savings of the dripping irrigation systems. This fusion system is the central pivot with drip...
